In 2014 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. One of THE most amazing experiences of my life. I read a lot of books about the trail before I started. One was "Becoming Odyssa" and I loved it. The story of Jennifer Pharr Davis first thru-hike. She later went on to break the supported speed record on the trail. So, she's kind of a rock star in hiker world.
Anyway, flash forward to 2019 and they were re-releasing the 10 year anniversary edition. Initially they had hired a designer who had no actually backpacking experience and so it just wasn't working. (I think the initial idea they submitted had 'Jen' in jeans. There's a tongue in cheek saying with hikers...cotton kills. HA. So jeans are a big no-no. ) Anywho... I was asked to do the cover! I was SO excited and even though this type of work is a little outside of my box I said H*LL YES!
